Lamu’s drought has dried up most of the water points used by wildlife. Hippos in particular are struggling to find large expanses of water and our teams recently spotted over 100 hippos desperately trying to survive in shallow mud in the Mkunumbi region.

The situation has been made worse by human invasion of wildlife habitats and the clearing of forests and bushes in areas intended for infrastructure. Situations such as this are set to increase as the human population continues to grow across Africa leading to more competition for vital resources.

However, in an attempt to alleviate human-wildlife conflict, our team have been working hard to provide a lifesaving source of water through installing water troughs holding up to 3,000 litres of water in the worst affected areas.
